• hello, i need someone’s advice on this

i am interested in purchasing the Mercury theme by Peerapong
    https://themeforest.net/item/mercury-responsive-portfolio-photography-theme/6207813

and am currently identifying a website developer to help me customize it

i am told that if i want to have “Category archives” and “Monthly archives” for my blog posts, these are things that are only possible with addition of extensive coding. Is that true? I am a little confused here – because i see so many blog websites these days that have “Category archives” and “Monthly archives”, so i thought these are pretty standard in most themes?

    comments appreciated

  • It’s not extensive coding. You just need an archive.php file in your theme folder. Then you can add the widgets that are provided by WordPress to add the menus to the sidebar.

If the Mercury theme doesn’t provide the archive.php (I don’t understand why they wouldn’t already have it) it’s not a big deal to copy it from one of the default themes. Depending on the theme it might be usable as is or you might need to tweak it a bit so it matches the rest of the pages, but it’s not extensive coding.
