Adding login for pages or sections of site

I am interested in applying a login requirement either to a section of my site or to individual pages. What is the easiest way to do this? Or is it best to create a separate site and simply link to it?

I want to make sure that indexing services won’t find these pages, or at least require a password if they do turn up in searches.
