Adding excerpts of blog posts to static page

Hi you guys. I am in dire need of help. A client of mine wanted a simple WordPress site, consisting of 5 static pages (Home, services, clients, etc.). Now he says he wants to be able to publish 2 or 3 excerpts of blog posts on the main/home static page, sort of as a “news” section. He won’t be updating this too often, but wants the possibility to be there, as to alert his customers of special events, etc. How can I go about doing this in an easy way? I have seen some solutions where I need to change the “functions.php” file, etc. But everytime I have tried something like that, the whole website screws up and I have to start over.
Is there any extension or any quick fix for that?
