Adding events to blog categories

    Hi,
    I have a News & Events page where I would like to display both my blog posts with news and my upcoming events. I have a sidebar with the standard category filter widget, but it only works for categories of blog posts, not for my events. Is there any way I can add the custom post type of the events to my categories so that they show up in the category filter widget? I’ve tried searching this for a long time but haven’t been able to find a working solution. I’m building a custom theme, but I’m still pretty new to this and still learning. I would really appreciate your help.

    (I have the latest update of the free version of the Events Calendar.)

    Hi, thank you. Yes, I tried it, but it doesn’t do what I’m looking for. I’m trying to add it directly to my blog categories so that it appears in the same list as other blog categories, but I’m not sure how to add it to the recognized post types for the categories.

    Ah, I’m not sure if that’s possible.

    You’re saying for instance, maybe you have a category called Photography, and you have a couple blog posts added to that category, and you create an event in that category.

    If someone clicks on the category Photography, you want them to see both blog posts AND events in that category?

    I’m not sure this does what you want but perhaps you should look at Events > Settings > General > Include events in main blog loop

    I don’t need the events to be the same category as the blog posts. I’m not quite sure how to explain it. So I have my News & Events page which is, by default, showing all my blog posts (designated as the posts page). It’s also showing my events because I checked the “Include events in main blog loop” option you mentioned, so that’s great. Now this page also has a sidebar with the “categories” widget that lets users select blog categories to display (basically filtering the posts shown). I want the events category to show up in that widget. What I imagine would look something like this:

    Categories:
    + News (14)
    + Special Deals (5)
    + Events (8)

    This way, it would be in the same widget rather than a separate one. Do you know it that’s possible? I tried using the function mentioned here:

    Ah, I see. Basically you want to include events in the list of post categories.

    Unfortunately this is not possible. You’ll need to use two different widgets, one for posts and another for events.
