• Hi, I’m a WordPress beginner and I’m getting extremely frustrated trying to complete the most basic tasks. The one I’m trying to accomplish right now is adding a background image to the main page of my website. (I’m unsure whether anyone else will be able to access the temp. domain as my site is not yet public.)

I’ve looked up several tutorials online, but none of the prescribed solutions seem to work. My theme (the Pekko child theme) doesn’t seem to support background images in the way other themes do; my image always gets blown up and I see no way to modify it.

I’ve tried the Simple Full Screen Background Images plugin. This was somewhat successful, although I found that it resulted in an unsightly black line running laterally across my image (not sure if this is the theme, the plugin, or something else – I double-checked that my original image didn’t have it), plus the plugin inserts the image across my entire website, which I don’t want.

Finally, I’ve tried adding custom CSS, but for every bit of code I’ve tried nothing actually happens at all. This has actually been my experience with this theme and the Kyoto child theme; no CSS I try seems to change anything, even when I clear the cache. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong, I’m mostly straight cutting and pasting, but somehow no CSS has worked for me – for anything. So that seems to be an even bigger problem beyond the current one.

For the record, I have a handful of plugins active but not many, mostly the standard Contact Form 7 and the rest. I’m also using Elementor, but not for the background image.

I’m going out of my tree trying to set up a website that looks even half-decent; does anyone have an idea as to what might be happening? Thanks in advance.

  • It’s best to ask theme questions in the theme’s support forum, because each theme is different. Also, there’s an interaction between Elementor and the theme, but those of us that don’t use it don’t know what’s what, so it might help to ask at that forum.

In general, the theme is for consistency across the site. Adding a background image to one page should be in the page (Elementor?), not in the theme.
If you put CSS in the Customizer > Additional CSS, it is emitted last, so it should override other CSS if the selectors match. The key thing is getting the right selector.
Each page has classes on the <body> tag, which you can see using the Developer Tool in your browser. On the home page, there is the home class, so that can be used to target the CSS to affect only that page.
