Adding attachments for download.

Hi,

I want to add “attachment” function in my blog. My wish lists are:

1. Attachments come from Media Library
2. downloadable
3. Shown in the place where I want it to be shown. (not essential)
4. Shows only the file name and type in a single line preferably with automatic file icon associated with the file type.

I have tried several plug-ins. However, I could not figure out how to make them work.
I once was locked out of my log-in page when I put some line in one of my .php template as they directed.
Also, they displayed too many aspects of the attachments.

What will be the most convenient and handy way to do the job?
