• I see no way to do this currently in WordPress and frankly that’s a bit odd. The only way to get images into a posts gallery is to upload them through that posts Add Media window? What if I have a bunch of photos already in the Media section or a client uploaded them through the Media section because that is the obvious place for them to put the files?

  • It’s a pretty fundemental issue – currently, images are treated like posts, and those posts are “children” of the post that you upload the image to.
Which allows for some nifty features.

It would require enabling multiple parents, somehow.

You’re correct about the way it works. The “gallery” feature is tied to a specific Post. All the images uploaded through the post editor become that specific Post’s gallery. If you upload them through the media section, then they cannot be in a gallery.

Don’t think of a gallery as some separate entity, because it’s not. A “gallery” is simply a bunch of images that are attached to some specific Post. It’s not some thing that you can move images in and out of, it’s not like a photo album or something.

WordPress really has no support for image groupings, albums, or anything similar. The gallery feature merely shows all images that are attached to a specific Post.

This one has really hit me hard also. So no way around it? What about plugins doing something similar?
