Adding an "if" statement

Right now if there is no photo for a staff member, it makes the URL for the photo the page that it’s embedded on and it shows a cannot load image symbol. Is there a way to add an if statement so that if there is no photo, it doesn’t show an a box? I guess my temporary solution would be to upload a 1px white dot as the staff image for those who don’t have one. But the problem with that is then their name doesn’t line up at the top of the text about them.
