Either I’m missing something completely obvious, or there is a serious problem with the default Gallery Block. I’m running WP v5.8.1 with few additional plugins, nothing for images or galleries.

I have created a couple galleries on a page using the default WP Gallery Block. This works fine. But when I try to add ADDITIONAL images to the gallery once it’s created, the new images replace the existing gallery instead of being added to it.

Here are the steps I’m doing and what I’m seeing. Please let me know if I’m missing something obvious.

    1) Click ‘Media Library’ button at bottom of the existing Gallery Block.

    2) ‘Add to Gallery’ screen opens.

    3) Click a couple new images I want to add so that they are selected (checkboxes).

    4) Click ‘Add to Gallery’ button in bottom right.

    5) ‘Edit Gallery’ screen opens with ONLY the images I had selected to add.

    6) If I click ‘Update Gallery’ at bottom right as expected, the existing gallery is replaced with just the images I wanted to add.

    – How do I properly add additional images to an existing gallery without messing up what is already there?!?

    Thanks!

  • I was able to replicate this problem: the “Upload” option works as expected (ie the uploaded image is added to the existing images in the gallery), but the “Media Library” option does not work as expected.

It seems this is a bug in 5.8, or more accurately, the version of Gutenberg included n 5.8… as the problem went away when I installed the latest version of the Gutenberg plugin (11.8 as of this writing)… and the problem doesn’t exist at all in WordPress 5.7.

Ok, thanks for confirming. Is there somewhere this bug should be addressed, if not already?

And I was able to get around it by modifying step 2:

    2) When the ‘Add to gallery’ screen first opens, click to switch to ‘Edit gallery’ to see your existing gallery items. Then switch back to ‘Add to gallery’ and continue with step 3.

Hope this helps somebody. It was driving me crazy…

This problem still exists. It existed then and… exists now. HELP. Seriously, this is such a major bug. I mean WP is all ‘hey we have block galleries check out how awesome they are!’ but they don’t work like they are supposed to. How is one to edit them?

ALso uploading media each time – when you already have media uploaded to put into the gallery – is a bad work around.

These are the provided directions and it does not work like that:

    Gallery Block

Kenny, thank you so much for posting your temporary fix. This has been driving me crazy! Most of the time it failed for me and sometimes would work but I could not figure out why. Your work around must have been what I was doing “sometimes”. I have used used your solution multiple times today and it works every single time. Thank you for sharing.

Hopefully this bug is fixed soon!

New to WordPress; noticed this issue, found it weird.

Just tried Gallery block among Coblocks, in case any different; but same problem.

Glad to have found this thread: Kenny’s workaround just worked for me too.

Thank you, @kennyll – this was just maddening. WordPress is a mature platform, I expect better!
