I recently rearranged my categories in an attempt to better the organization but it seems to have cause some problems. I had a whole bunch of categories in use, but I wanted them all to be under a parent category called News. It seemed to work fine, but when I pull the up category News on the site, it’s only pulling from one of the child categories and not all of them. It seems to default to News>ChildOne versus just being News with all of the content contained in it.

Anyone know how I can fix this issue?

  • Not sure what mechanism you are using to list categories or your category archives so look at the the_category() and the ‘parent’ parameter to understand how it displays a category hierarchy.

Just a note: By WordPress standards, ANY category that has been designated a Parent category, is not meant to be checked in the Category hierarchy when writing posts. Meaning, only the latest generation category should be checked.

It’s okay to have multiple categories assigned a post, as long as the other categories are not designated as parents. Think of it like this, only the youngest generation gets the action.

Only the youngest generation gets the action.

    I like that!

i found the root of the problem I think. By posting in only the newest parent category atleast once, it seems to validate the category and count it as it’s own category thereby allowing it to list all content under it. dunno why exactly, but it works.
