I’ve been using the plugin for several months without any issue.

Now, when I try to add a new slideshow by clicking on the ‘Add a new slideshow’ button the page reloads, but then simply shows the last slideshow created with all its images, the hamburger icon in the plugin’s search bar briefly changes and spins but nothing else happens.

    No error messages.
    No ‘New Slideshow’ page.
Just the last/most recent slideshow which was created.

I’ve disabled all plugins (except MetaSlider), changed the theme but this has no effect. I’ve tried different browsers, clearing my cache. I’ve tried logging in as a different user. Nothing seems to help.

I should add that other, normal WordPress operations are working as expected.

Is there a limit on the number of slideshows that you can have? (I have c800).

Is there anything else that I can do to help rectify this issue?

WordPress and plugins are all up to date and running PHP version: 7.3.20. Haven’t reached bandwidth limit, or server space limit.

    [EDIT]
I’ve just tried deleting the most recent Slideshow to test if there’s a limit on the number of slideshows and it now defaults to the next newest slideshow.

So the delete operation worked, still can’t add new slideshows ??

Sorry for the data dump. Just sifting through looking for any mention of the error 500. I can’t see a detailed explanation ??

    Hi,

I think the best approach now is to ask GoDaddy to help you find that actual error message. WordPress should be emailing the admin email, but that could also be failing because of the error.

GoDaddy will have better access to the server than I have so they can likely help out pretty quickly.

GoDaddy aren’t our hosting provider. They simply provide a backup service and WordPress management service called ManageWP.

Namesco Limited (UK) are our hosting provider.

Should I therefore contact Namesco and ask them to investigate the mysterious Server Error 500?

BTW – Thanks for your help on this.

Do you think that this is ultimately a fixable issue?

If they offer support, then yes. Probably good to see if they can help.

And most likely it will be fixable when you find out what specifically what that error message is, and what is causing it.

UPDATE: The hosting company, Namesco Limited have had the support ticket for a few days. It’s bounced around their various Customer Support, Technical Support and now Sales Support teams.

Interestingly yesterday, the website and MetaSlider was working as expected, so I added three new slideshows. Today, it’s not working – same issue.

None of the ‘New Slideshow’ records that are in the DB are showing.

I’m waiting a call from them to discuss the issue in detail – whatever that means.

Spent some time on the phone with our hosting company technical dept. Spoke at length with a 3rd line tech who was super helpful.

He moved the website to their professional hosing package and the error persisted so it doesn’t look like a server resources issue.

He’s recommending that we upgrade the PHP version that the site uses. We’re currently using PHP version: 7.3.20.

We’re going to try this later today and give it 24hrs to see what happens.

    Will keep you posted.

    Hi @-q–1

PHP 7.3 is very recent so I can’t see that being an issue. Based on the symptoms we’ve uncovered so far I would guess it’s something specific to your database. Maybe out of disk space?

However, someone with access to the server should be able to troubleshoot much better simply by 1. reproducing the error consistently, and 2. logging the variables around the location of where the errors are being thrown.

The errors are shown to happen in the console and the route listed on the error will point to the specific function in the api.php file within the plugin.

Essentially they just need to trace the error from the front as far back as they can.

I’ve just updated PHP to 7.4.2 and it’s made no difference ??

Before doing the PHP update, I took a copy of the site and updated my old local version (MAMP) and everything works as it should. No errors whatsoever.

The tech I spoke with reckons as their hosting is an Apache system, it’s difficult to trip up their server resource limits.

When he moved the site to the professional hosting package and we tried to replicate the error, we couldn’t get the server 500 error. Clicked on ‘New Slideshow’ and the page reloads to the previous/most recent gallery and that was all that happened.

Will do some more troubleshooting this afternoon.

Let me know if you discover anything new.

Spoke with the helpful tech at Namesco again today. Whilst talking through the comments that you’d made about DB size he started looking at the DB and spotted something but didn’t say what he’d found – just that something didn’t look quite right. Just said he’d have to consult with a colleague and would call back. Still waiting for that call.

    Will keep you posted.

Well it’s been a week or so since Namesco support took a deep dive on the DB and everything seems to be working. I’ve added a couple of dozen new slideshows and no issues.

Namesco have not said what they found, nor what they did but everything is working again. They clearly found an issue and fixed it but they’re not admitting to it, so I can’t really give you any further information.

I did the WordPress (5.5) and plugin updates a day or two ago and so far, there aren’t any issues to report.

I think it’s safe to close this thread. Thanks for all your assistance debugging the problem. Sorry that we don’t know what the exact nature of the problem was ??

I think it’s safe to say that the problem was caused by the DB at a very deep level.

That’s great that it’s working now at least! If someone comes by with similar symptoms I’ll at least be able to direct them to check the database, so the feedback was helpful. Thank you.

I’ll go ahead and mark this as resolved then.

?By the way, if you’re enjoying MetaSlider please leave us a 5-star review. They really help us out and let others find our plugin more easily.
?If you don’t think we deserve the 5 stars please let us know how we can improve, too. Thanks!
