• Hi guys,

So I a know next to nothing about web design, coding, what-have-you. I started a website with a theme I bought from a company and they handled the upload and all the technical details.

Now I want to add a favicon to the site, and I’m somewhat lost. Every how-to I’ve come across says its a “simple” process of uploading the favicon.ico file to the site’s root directory and pasting something to some header. (“Upload the what to the where with the who?”)

I already have the favicon file (courtesy of some very user-friendly websites), but I want to know how to get it on my site. If anyone could provide VERY detailed instructions about how to do that, I’d be quite grateful.

favicon.ico is a file, just like imagename.jpg ?? favicon is the name, and .ico is the file type.

You take the favicon.ico and you FYP it to the public_html folder for your site (same place your wp-config.php file is) and it should magically work. No header edits needed for most themes.

    Yeeesss…

What does FYP mean and where is the wp-config.php file?

FTP – Sorry. File Transfer Protocol. It’s how you copy files to your server.

    How did you install WordPress?

I didn’t. I paid someone else to do it. I’m illiterate when it comes to this type of stuff.

Feel your pain man. I started like you a while ago with no knowledge or understanding of wordpress at all. I’ve set up my portfolio site first and spent hours reading forum and other helpful blogs out there. But some don’t have the time to do that. Now I’ve just set up my own blog. It’s fairly new but for your issue,

There a lot of websites out there that create favicons for you if you feed them an image or logo. Just google for it. Post back if you need further help. They will output a 16px by 16px .ICO file that you may then upload to your theme folder, only accessible through FTP. But so many things can go wrong if you have no idea what you are doing. I’d contact that someone you paid to do that.

Time to get literate ?? If you’re going to run your own site, you need to learn how to upload files.

Contact your webhost and ask if they have directions for how to do it on their site. They should have some for brand new users. ??
