Adding a custom field into woocommerce checkout that can be validated

    I am about to start developing a new site. My client is hosting a conference and we are creating the payment and registration on Woocommerce. Members of this society are given a discounted rate to attend the conference. I would like to create a custom field where members can put their membership number in. This number would need to be validated from an external membership database which is hosted on another site. Any ideas on where to start?
