Adding a child theme after customization

Hi… I took over a WordPress project that was about 50% completed. There is no child theme. I would like to add one. At this point, aside from a lot of code in the custom.css sheet, I really don’t know what other, if any, files and function have been edited in the parent theme. Any tools available or advice on moving ahead with adding the child?
