• I’m running EM with users’ access controlled by Simple WordPress Membership plugin, users having ‘Author’ access and ‘can edit recurring events’ is set in Settings. I can log in as a user and add single events perfectly well, but when I add a new event which is recurring, and click Submit, I get the page called “Reschedule Events (name of event)”, with 2 red warning messages:

“You do not have permission to edit others events”
“Something went wrong with the recurrence update…There was a problem saving the recurring events.”

Also, a note appears under the Location box, suggesting I reset the fields and start again. If I do that, it accepts the new entry when I submit it.

Alternatively, I can ignore all the messages and just click the Submit button a second time, whereupon I get a popup which says:

“Are you sure you want to reschedule this recurring event? If you do this, you will lose all booking information and the old recurring events will be deleted.” When I click OK it creates the recurring event as I wanted it to.

I’m not rescheduling the event, just adding it for the first time.

    What is going wrong, here?

just to narrow down the problem and help us debug the issue is it possible to try the following temporarily:

    – deactivating all other plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).
    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems

I have deactivated all plugins except Events Manager and reverted to Twenty Twelve theme, but I get exactly the same behaviour when adding a new recurring event.

Which version of Events Manager and WordPress are you using?

I’m using Events Manager Version 5.6 with WordPress 4.2.4

did you included ‘Simple WordPress Membership plugin’ when you deactivate all plugins? I tried this and having some hard time replicating this.

I deactivated ALL plugins, except Events Manager.

Does this happen if you add a new reccurring event using a full admin account?

Are you using any of an events theme?

That’s interesting – it doesn’t happen if I add a new recurring event when using my admin account.

So – the problem must be associated with being logged in as a different level of user.

Normally, that level of user logs in via Simple Membership plugin, but all those user accounts also automatically create WordPress user accounts as well, so I tried logging in through the Dashboard as a normal member, not admin. This gave the same error as before.

This pointed me to the Events > Settings > User Capabilities:

The normal members are given ‘Author’ level by Simple Membership. I had set Authors to be allowed to do everything except edit or delete others’ events, recurring events, locations or bookings.

By a process of elimination, I think I have found that I can do that (unchecking all those boxes) except that I must leave checked the two boxes for Events: ‘edit others events’, and ‘delete others events’. Note that this is not the *recurring* events column.

So – even though the user was adding their own *Recurring* event, I must allow them to be able to delete or edit another person’s *Event* (but not recurring event).

Does that help narrow it down?

Did you find anything that might cause the problem?
