Added shipping zones without me knowing

I understand that recently a new shipping zone was added without your knowledge and that led to customers getting free shipping on all purchases even when they were not supposed to.

I’m assuming it was done after the last update of woocommerce. I also saw notices saying: “We added a few shipping zones for you based on your location, but you can manage them at any time.”

Is your site a new one? I ask this because this seems to be about the new feature called Smart Shipping which was introduced in the latest version (applicable only for new installations) but was later identified as a bug and was already fixed! In order for us to get a better idea of your setup and find out what caused this strange happening, could you please share a copy of your site’s System Status? You can find it via WooCommerce > Status. Select “Get system report” and then “Copy for support”. Once you’ve done that, paste it here in your response.

This is not on a new site, but we did migrate the site to a new hosting provider recently. However, I’m not sure if this problem started before the migration or after. I’ve always kept woocommerce up to date, so maybe I caught the bug on one of the updates prior to the migration and it kicked in after? I think I also updated WC once after the migration.

I got a new zone added “US free shipping”. The thread you mentioned above seems to be different. Are you aware of any other “free shipping” zone being added? Again, I want to make sure this never happens again. Are you saying this was a known bug and it’s fixed now?

Based on the message above it definitely appears to be the Smart Shipping feature mentioned above by Margaret.

You can see the message on screen for this new feature here.

It seems it kicked in and added the new shipping zone on your site but it’s been fixed and this is the PR that fixes the Smart Shipping defaults bug.

I completely agree, and we are sorry about this unexpected behavior of the plugin.

Can I have you report this behavior as a bug to the developers? (A “new bug” because on your site the installation is not a fresh one, unlike the bug referenced on the other thread). You can do that here: https://github.com/woocommerce/woocommerce/issues

This exact same thing happened to me on August 17th/18th. We found out about it after a couple days. Now we are getting ready to ship items and we have to contact the customers letting them know there was a glitch and I have customers complaining saying that we are shady and that this was false advertising.

We already have a US shipping zone and you added a second US Zone that was ONLY free shipping. This was a MAJOR issue and I need some type of assurance that things like this do not happen in the future!!!

That sounds very frustrating and I am sorry for the hassle.

This was a MAJOR issue and I need some type of assurance that things like this do not happen in the future!!!

I am afraid no one can give you this kind of assurance (and if they do I reckon they are wrong). There are too many different ways of setting up your store, covering them all is an impossible task.
May I suggest to test your updates on a staging site? This way you can prevent this in the future and have full control over such events.
