Added email field – doesn’t show

I added the email (default) field to the Profile Form. But it doesn’t display on the page at all. I have deleted it and readded it – nothing. The field is set to display to everyone, so I haven’t set anything that would be designed to hide it.
Any thoughts on why it doesn’t show. I do see it on the Register form – just not the Profile form (so people can change their email address).
