Hi, to all the folks using woocommerce I want to know if it better to add woocommerce as a subdomain or subfolder to my website. I’m concerned it will slow down my site if I add as a subfolder at the same time I don’t want to lose SEO link (if I add as subdomain). So what do you guys recommend?

Did you experience major speed loss?

For store size: I’m thinking digital products. No more than 1k

    Hello peoniesforspring1,

Thank you for contacting WooCommerce with your query.

It’s great to see that you’re taking a strategic approach to integrating WooCommerce with your existing website, considering both performance and SEO implications.

The decision to use a subdomain (store.yourwebsite.com) or a subfolder (yourwebsite.com/store) can have different impacts on SEO and site speed, and the best choice often depends on various factors.

From an SEO perspective, a subfolder is generally preferred because it’s seen by search engines as part of the overall same domain, which means all the ‘SEO equity’ you’ve built up contributes directly to the subfolder’s content too.

A subdomain, on the other hand, is often treated as a separate entity by search engines, which may require additional effort to build up its own SEO value.

Regarding site speed, while adding WooCommerce in a subfolder on your main domain could potentially add overhead to your primary site’s resources, it does not inherently mean a drastic reduction in speed. The impact on performance largely depends on your hosting environment and how you optimize both WooCommerce and your main website.

Here are a few steps you can take to help minimize performance issues:

    • Select a quality hosting provider that can handle WooCommerce’s requirements effectively.
    • Implement caching mechanisms and a Content Delivery Network (CDN) if you’re expecting high traffic.
    • Optimize your images and product content.
    • Keep your site, plugins, and themes updated for maximum efficiency and security.

Hopefully, you find this information helpful in making your decision. If you have any further questions, the WooCommerce community is a valuable resource, and you’re welcome to continue this conversation. ??

    Best wishes.

How much minimum hosting space is needed for a subfolder woocommerce to make it run smoothly with no speed issues? Funny, while subfolder seems to be the way to go and for which I had a tendency to gravitate towards the reality is different. I checked and 9/10 blogs in my niche (crafts) use subdomain shops. So I’m thinking I’m missing something

    Hello peoniesforspring1

    Thank you for your reply.

The space required for your WooCommerce site to run smoothly without speed issues depends on several factors specific to your shop setup.

These factors include but are not limited to, the number of products you plan to list, the number of images each product will have, and the number of plugins you wish to integrate for enhanced functionality.

Given that your niche is crafts, detailed images may be essential for your products, adding to the space requirements. Each additional plugin also has its requirements and potential impact on site performance.

If you are looking for a quality hosting service, Woo Express is the perfect choice. It consolidates everything you need into one convenient place, from secure hosting to customizable themes that will make your products shine. In addition to the essential features, you’ll also gain access to a suite of tools that will support the growth of your store for years to come.

You can try it free for 14 days, then upgrade to any paid plan for only $1 for your first 3 months.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have further questions. ??

    Hello @doublezed2,

    I have a follow-up question.

I want to move my WooCommerce site over to my WordPress site.
Could we do this with your subfolder suggestion?

Recently, I decided to turn off the WooCommerce cart and checkout and add a simple donation form for those who want to donate.

Also, to help reduce my workload I thought of merging my WooCommerce and my WordPress Site, so I only have to maintain one single site.

The Subfolder which was previously the standalone Woo Site will be /Final-Cut-Templates.

Both sites have been active for over 14 years.

Please let me know what you think. ??
Thank you and have an Excellent Day. ??

    Hello deyson

Thank you for contacting WooCommerce support.

I?want to move my WooCommerce site over to my WordPress site.
Could we do this with your subfolder suggestion?

Do you mean you want to merge your WooCommerce site with your WordPress site? So you have a single site as a result?

Subfolders and subdomains are used when there are more than one site.
If you are looking to merge sites into a single site then we need to talk about page structure.

Once you clarify this I will be able to your answer question accurately. ??

Instead of replying here, I suggest starting a new topic for this discussion to keep things organized. Put a link to this topic in the new topic for reference.

    Have a great day!
    Best regards.

    Thank you, @doublezed2

    Hello deyson

    That is great!
I will communicate further on the new topic.

If you feel that our plugin has been beneficial to your business, we would be truly grateful if you could take a few moments to leave a review.

Your feedback not only supports our continuous improvement but also helps others make informed decisions about using WooCommerce.

Thank you for choosing WooCommerce. ??

I want to go back to the beginning. Our single WordPress site was for our woodworking club of 200+ members. The pandemic stopped our meeting in person so we looked to eCommerce to collect annual dues. WooCommerce fit the bill perfectly. We added many plugins to achieve functionality and appearance. We are on a litespeed enabled server and use the litespeed caching plugin. However, the overhead has grown out of control.

Now we are looking at breaking out our content into three areas, using subdomain approach so as to isolate PHP and MySQL driven overhead.

    The subdomains are:

    • Didactic main site, master user profile
    • Store.main.site for WooCommerce
    • forums.main.site for forums.

    Questions:

    1. This type of installation fully supports Store WooCommerce creating a new account if the checkout page’s create-account checkbox is checked, yes?
    2. Once users are processed by Super Admin, user can log in on any of the three sites, and move freely between them given the design intent is for said user to be able to do so, yes?
    3. How do I export my current entire WooCommerce build and historical content, and restore into the new “Store” subdomain? Guessing, use Woo’s Export Products, and use MySQL export and import order et al tables. Second Guess – use a Woo-aware plugin migrate existing Woo content?
    4. Finally, maybe should have been first, is there a checklist for the knowledgable Linux, CPANEL, DNS, WordPress, subdirectory-network-site administrator that guides in a nutshell specific steps to create set this up? My first attempts have been time consuming and didn’t work as expected.

    Many thanks in advance.
