    Hello, again,

Yup, webp, the new image format proposed by Google would indeed be a nice addition. Up to now we were waiting to see whether it would become popular or not. I am not sure it is really that popular yet, but it is popular enough!

What exactly do you mean by saying “serving that as a separated cache for Opera and Safari”?

I see but it’s still good enough I would say chrome is driving the innovation. And I think users would like it, since other image optimizations have this I think it’s also good for you to add.

I mean so it works good with cache but if you cache it in a different folder or sync with cache plugins. Like cache enabler from keycdn which have plugins sync for webp that works as it should. Just so there is not becoming any issues for browser not supporting Webp such as safari, firefox etc. But Btw how does your plugin cache works with normal cache plugins for the cache lifetime of the images? ??

    Hello again, my friend,

I will certainly make a note of your proposals for our future versions!

As far as image cache lifetime is concerned we usually track the image file modification time and respect (or override, whichever the user chooses) the browser expiration headers. What also helps is that, even if an image with the same name is re-uploaded in the same month’s folder, WordPress gives it a new name, so there is no caching there whatsoever.

Thanks for the quick answers and taking my suggestions into consideration!

Maybe you could also just strip of the EXIF on images. That is an easy strip for you to compress images even more. Not lowering the quality of an image at all just removing unnecessary metadata.

I think that the PHP GD image library is already doing this by default. Actually it is a feature that people have asked from us to reverse, but, as far as I remember, it is not possible.

I will give it one more look though!

    Ok! ??

But back to WEBP, consider the market share I would still consider it to be useful to add (plus you can steel other plugin users to convert/swap to yours):

    What do you think?

No doubt the market share of Chrome is very significant. I have already added Webp to our list of future features. It will take some to research and test it of course first.

Cheers hope to see it soon then, any ETA? Are we talking weeks, months or quarters? Safari is still a strong competitor especially on mobile, and the web is going towards mobile first. Speaking for myself I use chrome for desktop but would never swap from safari on my iPhone. A different experience on different devices though.

But thanks! Would be great to see webp support in the plugin! What other future features do you have in the pipeline?

Well, to be honest, there are other priorities first. One of them is handling better CDNs and other caching/proxy setups with Varnish and Nginx, which are becoming very common nowadays.

Also, bear in mind that, although Chrome is indeed generally very popular and Safari is quite popular in mobile, the Webp format itself is not very popular among web users.

But we definitely keep our eyes open for all current developments in the field.

    Cheers,
    Takis
