On one of my WP-powered sites I have a special category that points out interesting articles from among all of them. The category is called “Daily Favorites.” A custom query in the sidebar lists 10 posts from the “Daily Favorites” category. Adding posts to that category is simply a matter of hitting the Edit screen and checking the “Daily Favorites” category.

Therein lies the slowdown for me: to add a post to “Daily Favorites” I have to jump to the edit screen everytime. I have to read all the day’s posts (on the frontend of the site so I can see pictures and such as well), choose 10 I like best, and then edit and save each one. It gets time consuming.

I know how to put conditional links up if the user is the admin, but is there a way to add a button or other UI element to single.php (or any template) that, when clicked, would add a specific category to the post–without having to hit the Edit Post screen?

Ideally I’d like a checkbox or button beside the existing “Edit” button. The checkbox (or button) when clicked adds the “Daily Favorites” category to the currently displayed post, saving the post in the process.

Anyone know how it could be done?
