Add to Cart Button Not Working after *required* Field shows up

after add to cart button is clicked, the extra product option that is marked required throws the correct flag as *required . But the add to cart button is no longer able to be clicked, even if the required fields are filled out. Is this something I set up wrong, or a bug in the code?
