Add sidebar/menu background color/ image

    I’m trying to add a background color to my sidebar for differentiation. I’ve been looking for a solution, but I’m coming up short.

    I’d like to do the same for the menu. I’d also, eventually, like to change the sidebar background color to an image.

    When I change this portion of the code:

    .widget {
	margin: 0 0 15px;
	border-bottom: 1px solid #333;
	background: #d8cce0;
	}

    it only adds a background behind each widget. Is there anyway to specify the entire sidebar?
