Add "Read More" to excerpt of each post

Hi,
I really like your theme – thank you for making it!
How can I add a “read more” for each blog post at the end of the excerpt? I usually prefer to have that set up in php. I am waiting on client to provide ftp access.

In the meantime, some reason the usual manual way does not work either: <!–more –> I tried adding it to the full and the summary but no dice!
