Add Options: Remove “linking” from – or – Add our own link to slider image

  • A suggestion to think about, maybe add to your “Relative” theme and any other theme.

    Suggestion
    Each slider image is linked to the actually post where it draws the featured image, post title and excerpt of the content.

    Add 2 Options in Customizer – when using the customizer to get the slider working, add the 2 options,

    1. option to remove any linking the slider has to the post,
    2. option to add our own link to the slider image.

    Reason

    • removing the post link reduces our workload. Currently when the slider image is linked to the post it draws from, clicking the slider image takes the reader to that post. That means we (should) create content (more than just a featured image and excerpt) to make the post of value when read. By adding the link removal option allows us to use the post only as a content source for the slider, much like some themes use the portfolio for slider content.
    • option to add any link where we can link the slider image to a specific page other than the post where the slider image content was drawn from. This increases the value and usability of the slider.

    I can understand your suggestions. There are so many possibilities with sliders, it can be overwhelming for many users; especially with so many varieties on the market (free and paid).

    The one used in Relative is primarily for showcasing posts from a selected category — such as a featured category.

    What is great though is that any theme that has a built-in slider has the option to be totally disabled (such as my themes) in lieu of installing any slider plugin that fits the needs of a particular website. Some sites might want posts displayed or some might want a slider that lets you stay independent and upload your own images, create your own excerpts, subheadings, links, using layers, show or hide elements….etc.

    Other developers/designers also have the option if they want to keep using the built-in slider, they can make custom changes using a child theme and overriding the slider templates and code….a bit more work, but again, it really depends on what the website needs are with a slider.
