Add number format to billing phone

The billing phone number field [‘billing_phone’] in woocommerce checkout page/ account page/ wordpress user profile has no number format by default, such as (xxx)xxx-xxxx . There is just one blank field, one can input number too short, too long etc and I find that really inadequate and make errors inevitable.

I find other plugins that has a number format for phone field but that cannot replace the woocommerce billing phone number field – as that field is too important and automatically shows up in email, invoice, order etc.

How to add more integrity to this field with number format/ mask? I don’t mean validation as that is done already I believe. There is no documentation anywhere I can find. Thanks.
