You’re accidentally being caught as spam. When spam is caught, it needs to first be reviewed by a moderator to check whether it is or is not spam. The spam is not publicly viewable until this, meaning you cannot do the normal forum things like edit it or link to it. If it is deemed not to be spam, it will be thrown back into the forums. Otherwise it will be deleted.

which is certainly a good, common sense policy. However, it would be nice if we knew about it ahead of time. :o)

Here’s my suggestion: Add the following to the tips that appear at the top when one starts a new thread (“Tip: When posting a new topic, follow these steps…”):

    * Note that some posts are held for review before being published live on the site. If your post is held for review, you will be able to see it, but no one else will, and you will not be able to edit it (yet). Don’t take it personally if this happens–it’s all based on a spam-filter algorithm, which errs on the side of caution. Come back in a while, and if your post did not contain anything problematic, you will be able to edit it. (But remember, all the moderators are volunteers with real life responsibilities, so please be patient.)

The problem with this suggestion is that no comments or topics are held for moderation. None.

The comments are held because the automated anti-spam system flagged those comments or topics as spam. It’s not a good idea to let the real spammers know that it’s not working so I don’t think such a notice would be useful.

As you’ve already posted about, the spam queue is routinely looked at. Valid comments are released and actual spam is deleted and those accounts are blocked.

Try not to read into the workings of an automated comment review system. Rather than checking to see if your topic shows up in the main be patient and do not repost again. That only convinces the spam filter that you are a spammer. Someone will eventually release your post from the queue.

Thank you Jan, I appreciate the fast response. Here are some comments/questions about what you wrote:

I was very careful to not use the word moderation; instead I used review.

Why would the kind of notice I suggested tell the real spammers that it’s not working?

Sound advice, although my suggestion would reduce the number of reposts. Many users do not understand why they cannot edit their post, and why their post does not appear in the list of posts for a thread. Consequently they will repost. If they read a notice like the one I suggest, they will be patient and not repost again.

Thank you for considering my suggestion. :O)

Reposts are annoying but aren’t that big of a deal.
