I recently updated WordPress to 5.7.2. I also updated a number of plugins to their latest versions, including Yoast SEO and Simple CSS.

Now, on the add new post screen, the panes for Yoast SEO, Simple CSS, and other plugins take up the bottom 80% of the vertical space of the screen. Only a small area is left at the top to actually add the post.

How can I tell WordPress to minimize these panes by default?

P.S. I realize that I can close the panes one by one. And I also realize that if I start typing the post the panes will automatically shrink. But this is annoying. I write best starting with a 100% blank screen, and it is inconvenient to have to have to clean up this visual mess each time I start a new post.

  • Hi!

    Try this:

    1. In the add new post screen, click the “triple dot” button in the top right to reveal additional settings

    2. Click “preferences” at the very bottom

    3. Toggle the “Yoast SEO” and “Simple CSS” switches to the “off state”

Does this get you to your desired result?

    Happy blogging!

    Thanks!

That does work for Yoast SEO, because there is also a button to show the relevant settings in the righthand pane. It also works for Simple CSS, but only because I never need to see those settings from the post page.

It doesn’t work for one additional feature, Custom Fields. This also takes up a lot of space at the bottom, but I need to access it on every post, and those settings don’t seem to be available in the righthand pane.

Any suggestions for that one, or am I stuck with it?

    Thank you!

I’m going to post this as a feature request… that the WP editor interface should remember the state of the toggles for various panes… so that if you collapse all of them and exit the editor, when you return, they are all still collapsed.

Unfortunately, it’s a binary choice with displaying the panes right now. So you are either on or off… versus collapsed/expanded AND/OR on/off.

Thanks! That seems right to me.
