• This may sound a bit of an odd question – which is perhaps why I can’t frame a question that gives me any results via Google.

Basically I have a multisite network (using subdomains) with a few hundred blogs on it. I want to add a new feature, a directory to my site. But I want to use a completely different theme, plugins etc, and as I think it will get a ton of submissions, I would rather it had a seperate Db from the start.

So my question is, could I just create a subdomain called “directory” in cpanel, upload a new copy of wordpress and treat is as a totally different installation when multisite is already in the cpanel root and using subdomains?

  • As long as the new subdomain definition comes before your wildcard definition in your apache configuration (I hope that makes sense), you should be able to do this.

At one time, I had 3 different multisite installations set up on my server; one at the root with wildcard subdomains; and two on their own subdomains (set up to use manually specified sub-subdomains).
