• We have been working on a site for a week or so and the Add Media button has gone missing. I was alerted to the problem when ‘WP Download Manager’ plugin couldn’t find the media gallery on trying to upload a preview thumbnail.

We seem unable to access the media library in any manner.

I have disabled all plugins, changed the theme to Twenty Fourteen, checked the file permissions on the uploads folder (ok), checked for javascript eerors all to no avail. The images are where expected in the uploads folder and still display on the site.

    Site in fully disabled mode:

Can you access the Users section of your blog’s Dashboard? If so, what is your user role listed as there?

Forget to mention, we upgraded from WP 4.0 to 4.1 in the hopes it might clear the problem

Hm, then you should indeed have access.

Try deactivating all plugins. If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

If that does not resolve the issue, try switching to the default theme for your version of WordPress to rule-out a theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).

    Another update.

By installing Advanced Tony MCE plugin, we have an upload media plugin option.

But now the media library doesn’t load and if we try and upload a file, we get an error: ‘you do not have permissions to load files” We have also got a different error when trying to upload: “An error occurred in the upload”

Have checked the permissions on upload folder and sub folders which are 755

Our first step was to inactivate all plugs and switch theme to default 2015 (see first post). The problem was still there.

Try downloading WordPress again and delete then replace your copies of everything except the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory with fresh copies from the download. This will effectively replace all of your core files without damaging your content and settings. Some uploaders tend to be unreliable when overwriting files, so don’t forget to delete the original files before replacing them.
