• I’ve read several posts in many different forums regarding this apparently common problem, but none of the fixes suggested worked for me. Here’s a bit of history on the problem.

    PROBLEM

    – When I click on the “Add Media” button, it returns an empty library;
    – When I try to upload a file in same window, it returns an error “An error occurred in the upload. Please try again later.”
    – However, the file did actually upload to the library; I can see all files by clicking on the Media Library in the Dashboard.
    – It worked fine until yesterday.

    TRIED THE FOLLOWING FIXES WITH NO SUCCESS

    – Deactivated all new plug-ins;
    – Removed all updates to the functions.php file;
    – Activated the WP standard theme;
    – Updated to WP 3.8.1;
    – Ran a ‘force regenerate thumbnail’ plug-in;

    I’ve run out of ideas, but since this appears to be a frequent problem (based on the number of people who have posted about it), I hoped that someone would have found a solution by now.

  • Just discovered this issue with my website as well. Posting here to get any possible solutions as well…

    I found a conflicting plugin AJAX Thumbnail Rebuild. I deactivated it, and my media library is back. Hope you can find your solution that easily!

    If your not using AJAX Thumbnail Rebuild as well, it’s most likely a conflict with another plugin.

    If it’s not a plugin as you’ve suggested it can be a theme issue. Try switching themes to 2014, and see if that resolves the issue.

    I found a solution via Serverpress.com. I develop my sites with Desktopserver in a Windows environment, and that’s where the problem was. According to a wonderful technician at Serverpress, (verbatim) on select Windows systems, a file can become corrupt and inject an additional carriage return which may be causing an issue. This issue can easily be fixed, here is how:

    1) Open the file at c:\xampplite\php\prepend.php in your favorite text editor, i.e. Notepad.

    2) Delete the entire contents of this file; please ensure that there are no carriage returns or any characters in this file and save it.

    3) Use DesktopServer’s first option to “Stop or restart…”, followed by the “Restart…” option. Please uncheck all checkboxes if you are not using these features (i.e. “Enable Dreamweaver…”, “Enable Trace..”).

    That solved the problem for me.
