I have found that different methods of adding media are adding to different year directories. Here are two examples.

    1. While editing a Page I choose Add Media, then Upload Files, then Select Files to choose a file from my PC. The file uploads to location wp-content/uploads/2009/04/<filename>.

    2. From the Dashboard I choose Media, then Add file, then Select Files to choose a file from my PC. The file uploads to location wp-content/uploads/2013/10/<filename>.

Todays date is October 21, 2013. The page where I show links to both examples is https://www.usarugbysouth.com/about-us/meetings/. However, be aware we have another issue which is causing none of our local content to be displayed (404!) so clicking on the links won’t show anything. I am hoping to be able to resolve the issues separately and this one seemed ‘easier’. Or perhaps whatever is causing this issue might be causing the seemingly more insidious one.

I have check the Settings –> Media and “Organize my uploads into month- and year-based folders” is checked. I have changed Permalinks to default and saved, and then back to our usual setting (post name).

Why the discrepancy in the month/year location of files being uploaded?

    Please advise.

  • In scenario 1, you must have been editing a Post or Page that was created in April 2009, so that’s where WP uploads the image to.

Yes. Yes, I am editing a page from 2009. So that’s how it works? Interesting. I would have thought it was the date the file was uploaded. As almost all of our pages were created at initial roll-out in 2009 that’s why most of them are in directory wp-content/uploads/2009.

For scenario 2, when I’m using Media –> Add New it isn’t linked (yet) to a specific page, so it uses today’s date. Ok.

So I guess it doesn’t really matter what year/month they save to, does it? As long as I have the files in a directory somewhere and can link to them. I’m not sure if this bothers me or not. Can you see any reason why I should be concerned, other than I’m OCD. ??

    Not really, no. ??
