Add custom message via URL parameters?

  • Trying to send new registered users to their profile page with an alert that tells them to change their password. I notice some WP admin pages use URL parameters to put alerts/messages in yellow at the top; is there a custom message parameter that I can’t seem to find anywhere? (I do know WP strips out unknown url parameters but I can always make it recognized with a plugin/filter.) thanks for any advice.
