Add Breadcrumbs to the Search Results page in search.php template

I have been looking high and low trying to find a way to add breadcrumbs to the search results page in wordpress. There are a few articles showing how to accomplish this with Yoast but I am looking to do it without a plugin. I am aware of how to add breadcrumbs to pages in wordpress but trying that does not work on the search.php template.

Has anyone been able to accomplish this and is wiling to shed some light?
