Add background image to menu in 2012

Are you using a Child Theme or Custom CSS plugin?

Are you familiar with CSS?
Download & install a Custom CSS Manager plugin and within its allocated section of the dashboard, add this;

.main-navigation {
 background-image: url("/wp-content/themes/twentytwelve/path-to-image/image.png");
}

Yes I am familiar with CSS but will download the plugin and give this a go.

This works very well, thanks, although I have now realised I don’t want an image for the whole of this header section, only behind the actual links on the menu. Any idea what the css would be for this please?

Try using these CSS selectors instead:

.main-navigation li {

}
