Add additional tabs to the “Image Upload” panel of post.php

    Is there an easy way to make a plug-in that will add another tab to the “Image Upload” panel? Currently there are 3 panels there that show up if they need to – Upload, Browse, and Browse All… I was wondering if I could add another image-grabbing tab next to Upload and have the other two still show up if needsbe.

    I want to make a “Grab” next to the ‘Upload” tab that would let me insert an image URL and then have it grab the image, store it on my local blog dir, and let me do with it like I would with any image I uploaded. This would save the step of downloading an image to my local HD and reuploading it.

    I imagine that there would be others who would want to add tabs to the image upload thing – such as a “Flikr” tab that would let you grab images from your Flikr account.

    Is there any plug-in that does this now? Can anyone get me started in the right direction?

    I’m new to PHP, but I’m a pretty good programmer in other languages, so I am picking it up pretty fast.

    I don’t want to be a complete nuisance, but if anyone could point me in the right direction on where to start looking at how to write a plugin to hook that area, it would be appreciated.
