    Hi Thomas,

Thanks so much for the email offer for free ad optimization tips. Could you give my site a quick scan on desktop and mobile and let me know if you have any general ad optimization tips? Layouts/approach?

And in particular, was wondering if you could help with this. I use a slider header image on Posts (not homepage). This was an option enabled by the paid version of my theme. In Advanced Ads (premium), I’d like to use the Custom Position to get a mobile-only ad somewhere at the top of my Posts. But because of the slider image at the top of the page, I’m not sure what element to click for the placement.

As you know clicking the custom position option will scan your site and highlight areas of my site I can affix the ad to (above, below, within, etc.) but it does so on the desktop version. I can’t seem to get a good placement enabled for mobile on Posts.

Thanks for all your hard work!
    – Chris

    Hi Chris,

    thanks for reaching out.

Where exactly would you like to place an ad at the top of your post? The basic version of Advanced Ads comes with the “Before Content” placement, which places the ad above the text. Would you like to place it even higher?

I will wait for your reply on this and also take another look to see what else I can find.

    Hi Chris,

I had another look at your site regarding the current ad setup.

Very good: you moved the sidebar ads into the content on mobile!

I think the orphaned ad unit in the footer won’t do much good. Unless you get some good CPM from impressions only, I would remove it from desktop and mobile.

Did you already test ads directly in the content on desktop ads well? Maybe, your affiliate links at the end work well, in which case I would only think about moving something like this into the content as well. Otherwise, I would see if AdSense might work better.

I would also test a Matched Content AdSense unit at the end of the article. You can put it into one rotating ad group with the Amazon ad unit and run it for a few days to see what is working best.

    I hope this helps.

    Hi Thomas!

Thanks so much for the tips.

I stupidly responded to your first question directly via email, which I’m not sure even made it back to you lol. But I implemented a new ad yesterday directly below the mobile banner by placing it within content, before paragraph 0. That works for me.

You know, that orphaned ad unit in the footer? I’m not even sure how it got there. None of my Advanced Ads placements were designed to display an ad there. I was wondering if it was the result of me having tested Auto Ads or playing around with Jetpack’s ad placements on WordPress previously.

I’d remove it if I could figure out how the hell it got there haha.

    Thanks again,
    – Chris

    Hi Chris,

Auto ads could make sense. One of their favorite ad placements seems to be the footer.
