Has anyone had any success in running ActivityPub on a SiteGround hosted site? I can’t get Webfinger to work. I have tried several hacks, but SiteGround blocks all Webfinger redirects.

I contacted SiteGround support and their respose was:

We have reviewed the case and unfortunately, we won’t be able to change our setup to meet the requirements of this plugin for access to the .well-known folder. This is a system folder with specific configuration which is why we cannot make changes on it as we are risking to break a lot of other services.

It would be best to report the problem to the plugin providers so they can consider implementing the option to change the discussed URL.

AND…

If you wish you can contact the creator of the plugin and ask if they can adapt their plugin to our hosting environment, and if they are unable or unwilling you can try to use an alternative plugin.

Not very helpful. I really want to get this to work. Any suggestions greatly received.

I have an open ticket with SiteGround, so can pass on any comments or questions.

Hey @rommieg that is sad to hear ??

First I want to comment on the comments of Siteground: It was not my choice to use the .well-known URI, it is defined by the spec, so I have not really any possibilities to change that.

If you can add static files to the .well-known folder, maybe this helps: https://github.com/pfefferle/wordpress-activitypub/issues/188

Otherwise I have no idea how I could help you. I already tried to get in contact with some hosters, but that is also not that easy ??

Thanks for your reply. I passed your comments to SiteGround, and I think we have a result! They added the static file (I asked them about this before, but was told it was not possible). That has got rid of the errors but things were still not working. I checked the webfinger file and it had my domain, but not the correct username. I corrected it and it now reads:

Things were looking promising. I could find my instance on photog.social https://photog.social/@[email protected], but not on mastodon.social ??

I tried some posts – these are not showing up on Mastodon ??

Then my author page https://www.gostomski.co.uk/author/rommiehjg/ turned to mush (it displayed code). Deactivating and reactivating ActivityPub fixed that.

Also, when displaying my profile on https://photog.social/@[email protected] (without any posts), and I hit refresh, it redirects to https://www.gostomski.co.uk/author/rommiehjg/

So, quite a few problems! I suspect the webfinger file is not quite right, but I don’t understand what each line does. Can you please point me in the right direction? Thanks.

Hi Matthias

After much testing and trial and error, I managed to get everything working, including automated, scheduled posts using Make.com.

I would like to be able to modify the header image, user image, username, bio, etc., but I see from other posts that you are working on that.

Thanks for your help and providing us with this very powerful plugin.
