Active Genesis

I want to use the plugin, but when I activate it, I see a prompt that says that Genesis must be activated.

I’m currently building a theme using the Genesis framework, so I’m pulling genesis through my child theme. I thought that should be enough to ‘activate’ genesis. Am I incorrect, or is it a compatibility issue with the new version of WP?
