Activating WooCommerce Forces SSL?

Ah I’m completely baffled. I’ve been running a WP site with WooCommerce for the last couple years off my server without https enabled. I haven’t been using any checkout functions, the site is just a catalog.
For some reason now, even on a completely blank WordPress install, activating WooCommerce reloads my site on https, which has not been configured, and so the reload times out. Is this normal behavior for the plugin? You can assume it would be using the default settings since I tried to get it running on a totally blank WP install with no luck.
I’ve tried this on the AWS instance that is currently running my site and on a local server (using MAMP) and its the same behavior. Is SSL required now to run WooCommerce? Or why would it have worked before? I haven’t made any changes to the server recently. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
