• I am a novice and I do not know php, html or any other language so please give me simple instructions as if you are speaking to an idiot.

I am using the Pretty Parchment theme and I would like to change themes. Now that I have installed the new theme, I want to activate it but, I don’t want to cause causing viewing problems for my website since it’s going to take me about a week to create a new website.

Also, I’m not sure if the only option is to display an ‘under construction’ page while I’m editing my new theme. If so, how do I replace the old theme and website with an ‘under construction’ page?

  • You could work on the new site on your local machine — see the Codex on Local Host installs.

I did this before I had a server based site and it worked perfectly the first time around — on a Mac using MAMP, but there is a Windows version called WAMP.

There is also a forum specifically for local host topics if you are interested in doing that.

There are also ways to set up a development site on a server — you should talk to your hosting company about that option.
