    Hi there,
I’m having problems setting up my Wordfence 2FA. The plugin is up to date.

I’m being told: “Error activating 2fa. The code provided does not match the expected value. Please verify that the time on your authenticator device is correct and that this server’s time is correct.”

Reading other forums, I have checked my server/site time by navigating to WordPress Dashboard > Settings > General and checking my Local time. I have also checked Wordfence > Login Security for the current time being reported, as well as Wordfence > Tools > Diagnostics > Time. I have synced times on the device where I have the authenticator and done a ‘time correction for codes’ on my authenticator.

All the times agree. I am UTC + 2. Times are exact match in hours and minutes, only out a couple of seconds at a time. Not sure how to fix that or why necessary?

Please can someone advise how I can set up my 2fa with Wordfence?

  • Hi @nudgingfinancialbehaviour,

Are you able to setup 2FA with your Authenticator on another site? I’m trying to find out if your WordPress site is mistimed, or your mobile device is mistimed.

Note that the timing has a +/-90 second window of tolerance, so unless the timing is off by minutes, or hours, it should still work.

Can you try changing the timezone found within WordPress -> Settings -> General?

    Hi Dave,

Yes, I have already checked WordPress -> Settings -> General. All the times agree. Nothing is out by a minute. Only seconds, therefore it should fall within the tolerance level and should work, I agree.

Unfortunately, I only have one site so don’t have anywhere else to check it against.

Hi @nudgingfinancialbehaviour, what kind of storage for your database do you use? If MyISAM – try to convert it to InnoDB. I had a problem with something different, but I remember that in the past, I also couldn’t activate 2FA in Wordfence (so I gave it up). Today I manually converted the database to InnoDB – to solve another issue – now I tried to activate 2FA, and it works! ??

I created a tutorial on how to perform this database storage engine “migration.” If somebody is eager to try it, here is the link:
