• It would be nice if there was an action to add an item to the admin menu. I know the admin menu would have to be reworked to include this, but it would be very beneficial. There are several “hacks” that could probably be converted to plugins if this was in place and it would remove the need to mess with code that might accidentally be replaced when a user upgrades. I feel like my whole install might crash from the simple fact that I have modified certain files to include hacks and I worry every time I upgrade that I will mess something up. I know the idea of plugins is to get away from changing the wp code, so this would be a great help.

  • Perhaps you should clarify what you want done.
Plugins are an option, and there are a “step-up” from hacks in terms of ease-of-use and manageability.
If you really are speaking of the admin menu, and you’re talking about the links horizontally across the top below the “WordPress” logo, you can add your own links by editing the menu.txt in wp-admin. Not the best way, but it’s the only way (I know of) and it works. Instructions are in the file.
If you’re talking about individual WP files you’ve hacked, not all changes to WP can be made through plugins/hacks (that I know of).

    rayne,
I think I did the same thing you did. I edited the menu.php file and added another page in the admin menu, but I can’t get figure out how to make the “current page” work correctly. When you’re in the page that I added it also indicates you’re in the “profile” page as well and vice versa. If you could tell me how you got around this, I would appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    Brandon
