• Hi!

I wanted to change my URL from .dk to .com and didn’t know how on earth I was going to do it. So, I did something that messed everything up.

In “general settings” I changed the domain from https://mariaberthel.dk to https://mariaberthel.com both places – that meant that now I cannot get into my wordpress account and I change what I did because it says:

    Not Found

The requested URL /wp-login.php was not found on this server.

I have no idea how to fix this as I cannot log in and all I wanted to do was change my URL… Please help!

    Oh, and merry christmas.

  • Hey Maria,

Assuming you have control of the “mariaberthel.com” domain, you will want to update the domain to point to the same IP address as “mariaberthel.dk”. I can see that those domains are resolving to different IP addresses.

If you don’t yet have control of the .com domain, then you may need to manually revert the change in the database. Do you have direct database access to your WordPress install?

    Hi Jeremy!

Thank you so much for your answer! I am correctly trying to figure out whether or not I can update the IP address for my .dk domain, but since I am awful and very new at this I’m still struggling with it – I’ll let you know if I find something out!

I’m really sorry, but I don’t know how to access my WordPress database.. I’m a true newbie to all this.

I do think that I’ve found a database in my “webhotel” – at least I’ve found a whole lot of files for my .dk domain – for example a folder called: /public_html/wp-admin

    Hi Maria,

/public_html/wp-admin (and other files) are the PHP files that make up the WordPress application on the web server. You shouldn’t need to change any of those files.

Most hosts will provide database access via something called “phpMyAdmin”. Do you know if you have access to something like that in the control panel for your website?

Oh gosh! Yeah, I’m currently logged in on phpMyAdmin!

In phpMyAdmin, you should see the database for your WordPress install. Depending on your hosting, there may be more than one database. If you’re not sure of the database name, take a look in the /public_html/wp-config.php file. There should be a line that has DB_NAME, followed by the name.

Once you know which database to look at, look for the “options” table inside that database. It will usually have a prefix of some kind, so it may appear as “wp_options” or something else similar.

Inside the options table, look for 2 specific rows. The “option_key” column will say “siteurl” for one of them and “home” for the other. Update both of those to the correct domain, and then you should be able to get back into your site.

Thank you so so so much Jeremy! It worked! And even I could make it work, thanks to your explanation. Thank you!!!

If you got time, could I perhaps ask you if you know how on earth I update wordpress so that I can “host” my .com domain with my wordpress-account? Or whether I can somehow merge my .dk domain and .com domain? I completely understand if that’s a tad too much to ask, I’m just really happy that you wanted to help!!!

Are you looking for both domains to display your site, or do you want of them to redirect to the other?

    Thread Starter mariaberthel

    (@mariaberthel)

I would love for them to redirect to the other, so that they become ‘one’ – if that’s possible.

Your hosting control panel should have a way to manage the domains so that one of them redirects to the other. Then if someone visits the redirected domain, they will end up at the main domain.

It’s been a while since I’ve used a normal hosting control panel, so I don’t remember the exact steps to do this. However, your host should have documentation somewhere or support that can help you get this accomplished. It would also be a good idea to reach out to their support if you need more help with that, as it should be something they’re pretty familiar with.

Thank you so much for your help! I’ll try it out.

    Merry Christmas to you too!
