My friend and I have recently come up with an idea for a website and decided that wordpress is the way to go. After reading a few articles we decided that we should install wordpress on our local computers in order to develop the site. We read about the options of doing so – MAMP, XAMPP, Microsoft WEB PI, etc. – but before choosing the method, we want to know if it is possible to develop the website from our two different computers such that any change that will be made on one computer will immediately be updated and shown on the other? if so, how can it be done and is there a preferable installtion method in ths regard?

    Thanks.

The short answer is no. A longer answer is that it would require additional hardware and software, and for what the two of you would spend on that HW/SW, you could instead obtain a quality VPS for a few months and do all your development on the VPS. Or you could save a great deal of money and use a quality shared hosting plan with a dedicated IP address.

I would suggest obtaining a domain name for your website. Domain names are cheap, and having one would allow you to use your local systems’ “hosts” files. That would let you keep the domain name secret and also make it very easy to take the site live.

Finally, make sure to read the following before you select a hosting company:

    Thank you!

So after reading about hosting options and saw some threads about keeping the site private by adding a password and also preventing search engines from indexing it I think that this will be the best solution for us.
