• Resolved jjdg

    Hello,

I have detected an issue with the Neve theme when using a screen reader.

I’m using an iPhone XS with iOS 15.1 and the VoiceOver screen reader.

When opening the navigation menu, the screen reader focus gets stuck on the main content instead of moving to the items the navigation menu. The screen reader focus should move to the “Close”-button and then to the navigation items.

The navigation menu does work properly when using an external keyboard (“Keyboard navigation”).

I hope to see this issue get resolved soon, because it affects the accessibility of all websites which are using Neve theme.

    Kind regards,
    Jan Jaap

  • Hi @jjdg,

    Thanks for choosing Neve!

We reported this issue to our developers, hopefully it will be fixed in the next updates of the theme. Thank you for pointing this out!

    Have a nice day!

    Hello @luciamarinescu,
Thanks for notifying the developers. I’ll keep an eye on theme updates and the changelog.

    Hello @jjdg!

I’m coming back to this issue because we are not able to replicate it. Could you please tell us if it occurs with a default theme like Twenty Twenty One as well or if it is happening only with Neve?

    Thank you!

Hello @luciamarinescu , thanks for the follow-up. I have checked our website and the focus movement to the navigation menu does seem to work now.

However, with VoiceOver enabled, I am unable to select the dropdown indicator in the menu. This means users of screen readers are unable to select menu items which are nested. With an external keyboard, this does work, and they even expand automatically.

Hey @jjdg, we’re trying to identify the problem and determine if this is a bug in our theme or a problem with VoiceOver where we don’t have any control. From reading on this, it looks like they had some issues with the 15v of the VoiceOver app that might have introduced misbehavior. Here is some information with regards to this: https://www.applevis.com/blog/accessibility-bugs-introduced-resolved-ios-15-ipados-15-blind-low-vision-users.
It would be awesome if you could test with one of the default themes from WordPress, like Twenty Twenty One, and let us know if the problems are still there.

    Hi @cristian-ungureanu

Twenty Twenty-One and Twenty Twenty-Two automatically expand nested navigation items on mobile.

Twenty Nineteen automatically expands nested navigation items on VoiceOver focus.

Twenty Twenty has separate focus for the dropdown items, this is how it should ideally work in Neve.

I’m fairly confident to say that the accessibility markup of Neve can be improved in this case, considering it works nicely in Twenty Twenty. Maybe take a look at the HTML structure and ARIA attributes in that theme.

Thank you for testing! We’ll further check and post here when we have an update.

    Hello @jjdg!

Could you please check if this issue is fixed in the latest version of Neve (3.3)?

    Thank you!
