• I can’t access admin on a site I created for someone over a year ago, I have had a number of automatic upgrade emails, but have had no need to visit the site again. Now I need to upload new photographs, but normal /wp-admin gets a 404 Not Found The requested URL /wp-admin.php was not found on this server.
    It’s here https://www.edinburghinnwells.co.uk/
I have edited the site many times through the admin toolbar, and thought I was beyond messing about with FTP!

    Thanks

    Peter

I also get You must log in to access the admin area. if I try https://www.edinburghinnwells.co.uk/wp-admin/

    Hi Peter,

Can you post your .htaccess file contents here, the file .htaccess is located within the root directory. ??

    Thank you.

This is where it gets difficult. I’ve killed a computer since I uploaded the site files, and no longer have the ftp setup, so can only access it via wp-admin, except I can’t! I guess I’m going to have to find out the ftp login again?

    Peter,

Yes, you’ll have to find that out because if I’m correct there is an issue either with your .htaccess or another problem.

That said, trying to go to /wp-admin/ asks you to login, however /wp-login.php does weird redirect. So we have to see what is really within your .htaccess file, make sure its clean.

Another option with FTP access would be to re-upload few major role files from a fresh downloaded WordPress version file. However, that’s later. ??

Keep us posted on your FTP progress so we can help further.

    Thank you!

OK, I have the ftp login and set it up in Dreamweaver, connects fine on the test server, accepts password, then when I close the setup window, it goes off to gather all the site files, and crashes Dreamweaver. Did it three times. I have now connected with Filezilla, and copied the .htaccess file to my hard drive, overwriting what was there [original install files]. In a text editor it looks like this

    # BEGIN WordPress

    # END WordPress

only there’s a small square in front of first # and two before end #, and again one after last word, but these disappear when I paste it here.

There’s not a wp-admin file in the root, but there is a wp-login and I’ve copied that to hard disc and could paste it if it would help. If I enter it at the prompt though, it gives a 404, yet it is there.

.htaccess file is not a default windows file type, thus errors you describe.
For example, copy and paste the whole code to Notepad (on all windows) and specifically save the file with no file type (select “all files”).

After, save the content of this notepad file as “.htaccess”.

The location to upload this file by FTP is the root of your webserver, if it works it will ask if you want to “rewrite/erase” the normal .htaccess file (on some ftp servers, this file is hidden, but if you can rewrite it’s confirmation you did well).

Also, .htaccess file must not be touched in /wp-admin/ it’s another subfolder and WordPress manages it well in 100% case (no need to change/touch it ever).

I’ve saved it to my desktop, but how do I get it uploaded here?

I have a file in the htdocs/ folder that might be connected to this issue, it’s .ht88yspv.appconfig.php or is that just setting a database password? I may have follow directions and put some kind of security on over a year ago, and forgotten since, my memory being faulty. How would I find out?

    Hi Peter,

No this file is not related.
If your’re on the kind of server I think you are, your root is this or something like: htdocs/public/html or htdocs/public/

Depends where Apache or Nginx, “www” root is on your server.

AND if you didn’t make a custom root for web server. Try putting a few phpinfo.php files on various folders to be sure.

But for your questions, no, appsconfig.php is no database password for WP, it’s never stored that way ~ would not meet WP overall quite high high security rules.

Again no idea what this files do – it’s possible you use a website manager or so I’m not aware of too (cpanel, ispconfig? stuff like that).

I know the root, it’s /htdocs/ I don’t understand what you’re saying. Did you understand that the problem is that I can’t log in, at https://www.edinburghinnwells.co.uk/wp-admin it just says You must log in to access the admin area, but with no means of doing so.
Can I upload all the files again, and would this help to gain access?

On top of all this hassle, I got an email from WP telling me it had updted the site to the latest version! I still can’t log in.
