• I so wanted to like this plugin. I’m really in need of a simple plugin to collect subscriber emails and compose/distribute one newsletter per month. I thought this would fill the bill, but it didn’t.

The main problem was that I couldn’t seem to figure out how to add the subscriber widget to my sidebar. I know… that should be super easy. I’ve done it dozens of times before with other widgets/plugins. But I just couldn’t get it to work on my sidebar. So I tried… and tried… and tried to get a little assistance. I asked on their “forum”… two times. I sent direct messages. I even enquired about paying for the premium upgrade in order to get help. I might as well have been trying to talk to a tree. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!! It was literally like they were saying, “We don’t want you to use our plugin,” “We don’t want to help you.” “We don’t even want to take your money.”

Frustrating to the max. I’ve never had this kind of horrible service with any other plugin. I wasn’t impatient, either. I tried for three weeks, thinking maybe they were just busy or something. Nope. Just abysmally poor customer service.

  • I’m not affiliated the the devs in any way, but I’ve been a happy user for a good few years – and upgraded to the paid version. I’ve always found support to be helpful, though it does sometimes take a while (I’ve no idea how large the team is).

Post the links to to the forum posts here and maybe I can help in some way.

Hi Adam. Thanks for reaching out. My biggest problem w/ the plugin was just getting it to work in my sidebar. I finally figured out how to do that on my own (embarrassingly simple), but it’s still not how I would like it. The Newsletter Plugin seems to have three widget choices, but I wasn’t able to edit any of them to look like I wanted. For example, I currently have the subscribe link in the (right hand) sidebar of my website, but I only want subscribers to fill in their first name & email address. No matter what I do, the ‘Last Name’ field always shows up. Ideally, I’d like that field to be named ‘Last Name (optional)’ But I can’t seem to edit it. I would appreciate any suggestions you might have. Thanks again for your willingness to help. BTW, the website I’m referring to is: https://www.PurdyBooks.com

Are you using the free or paid version of Newsletter? I have the paid version – and in Newsletter/Subscription/Form/Main Fields I have a checkbox for the Last Name field. On my version/site, unchecking it *does* remove it from the widget (I also have it in the R.H. sidebar). If you do manage to remove it from the widget, don’t forget to remove the entries for that field from the the response emails etc.

Thank you so much for the help. I’ll check into that and give it a try. At one time, I planned on doing the paid version, but when I didn’t hear back from them regarding my questions about that version, I decided that was a bad sign.

Hey Adam… I just found the ‘forms’ page, and sure enough, there are the check boxes. Now I have another question, if you don’t mind. Both the first and last names are checked and set to ‘optional’ on the pull-down menu. As long as I leave them checked and optional, do I still need to worry about keeping or removing those entries in the response emails, etc., even if people choose not to fill in those fields? (Hope that made sense.) (-:

“Optional” simply means that submitting the form won’t fail if that field is blank … but you may still get a line in outgoing emails that have the field label (eg. “Surname: “) followed by a blank (which may not be what you want).

Unticking the box will remove the field from the widget, but you may still have the label and tag in the HTML of your outgoing email templates (if you once had that field enabled).

Thanks again, Adam. Your help is greatly appreciated. I’m slowly starting to get it figured out.

Hi, thank you for sharing your experience, and thank you to @adamnz for the help he provided. As you found out, there are two widgets provided by the Newsletter plugin that can be added to the widget area (a standard one and a minimal one). Those widgets have some options, while the general settings are derived from the main form configuration.

A third option is to use the shortcodes ([newsletter_form] and [newsletter_field]) and add them to a “shortcode widget” (this is by WP and it works on the new widget areas if the theme supports them).

With shortcodes, the form can be built from scratch. Here is the documentation page:

    https://www.thenewsletterplugin.com/documentation/subscription/subscription-form-shortcodes/.

I would like to remember the plugin is free and we give support to everyone for free. Sometimes it simply takes time to answer.

    That’s all.

(we’re reviewing the plugin to be fully compatible with the one-click-unsubscribe mandatory behavior by Google and Yahoo).
