Absolute novice; step-by-step install to iPowerWeb?

    I am trying to install WordPress on my iPowerWeb host. My only experience at putting anything on the web is using FrontPage to publish my website. And, even doing that, I avoid looking at the “show HTML” stuff in FrontPage except for the occasional troubleshooting or pasting code that is given me to paste. So, I don’t know HTML, let alone the SQL[?] which seems to be needed to set up a blog using WordPress.

    So far, I have:
    1. Downloaded WordPress on my home PC and unzipped this file: wordpress-2[1].3.1.zip
    2. Set up an area in my iPowerWeb account as a database
    3. Tried to use iPowerWeb’s phpAdmin program like a monkey trying use a Swiss Army knife to upload files into this database — Ignorantly clicking and poking and trying to upload the unzipped files one at a time. This only produces “SQL scripting errors” — huh??
    4. Talked to iPowerWeb techs who say “it’s not my job” and refer me to this community. One tech says you guys will absolutely be able to do this for me… he has worked with you himself to set up his own blog.
    5. Requested a one-time install from a volunteer. Haven’t heard anything back.

    Please help me.

    Wow, moshu… that was fast. Thank you. I will try to do more homework as you suggested.

    But one quick question: Is this silly for me to be doing, given my background [no programming at all]? After looking at screenshots and reading reviews, I figured WordPress would be easy to use. But I’m not prepared to learn SQL, etc.

    You don’t really need MySQL or PHP – if you just want to blog and don’t plan extensive customization of your blog.

    The only thing you have to do about the database is to create one. That’s it. Although I have no idea what did you mean by:

    That sounds odd…

    I meant that I went into my iPowerWeb acccount, clicked on vDeck and these menus: Host Manager, Databases, Setup – When I got to Setup, I added a new database and gave it a name. There is absolutely nothing in this new database. I think it’s just something like a file folder… an empty spot for a database.

    As you can see, I have never worked with any database on iPowerWeb (or anywhere else) before.

    We are getting closer…
    2 = that was the right thing to do. I assume, after doing it, it gave you some information about the databse server (the database’s location).
    You also need to create a user and add it to the database.

    Thank you. I am going to go away no and do some homework, follow-up on your suggested links, and hope the install4free guys to get back to me! I really appreciate your guidance.

    OK. I gave this whole installation business a bunch of thought and decided to simply set up an account with your top recommended WordPress host: Bluehost. About 20 minutes after I established my Bluehost account, I had installed a database and, within it, automatically installed WordPress. So now, I need to learn to USE WordPress, instead of fooling around trying to install it. Sorry to have bothered you.

    P.S. — Given the grief that iPowerWeb gave me re: installing WordPress and warning me that they wouldn’t support me with WordPress and given the friendliness and support and instant installation given by Bluehost, I recommend that any of you who are trying to set up WordPress on iPowerWeb should simply switch to Bluehost.

    it’s very easy now at iPowerweb! if you use the install section in vdeck.

    It’s only easy to install WordPress with Ipowerweb if you are hosting one WordPress blog. If you have the pro-plan and want to host multiple WordPress blogs then it’s not so easy. After the first installation of WordPress you have to install WordPress manually or you have to pay extra for the “premium” Install Central. This wasn’t always the case they just took away the multiple WordPress installation a couple of days ago. Kind of vexing.
