The slider works by marking posts as featured. Look for the featured option at the bottom of the post editing page. Featured posts will appear as a single slide each one, displaying the excerpt as the description and the featured image as the background.

If you don’t see the Post Options box, try enabling it using the Screen Options tag at the very top.

I would please like to know if this is the only way to display images in the slider and also how do i get the featured post effect on my home page (i.e the three squares with the yellow icons)

Since we cannot add any custom post types to the theme, yes, it’s the only way.

As for the featured blocks, you need to do the same thing with pages. Posts go into the slider, while pages are used as feature blocks.
