I just got blocked by defender while deleting some images, something about the 404 detection, I could solve it using a vpn just to change my ip to log in the admin area to put my original IP on the white list then turned the vpn off, it worked! (yay)

The thing is: why was I blocked while deleting images?

    thanks!

    Hi @wkreations951357,

The thing is: why was I blocked while deleting images?

Did you check the Defender logs regarding the reason for the block?

We cannot fully state the exact reason without seeing the logs for the specific IP under Defender > Firewall > logs. However, one of the reasons for the 404 lockouts to occurs might be if you are loading a page or post while deleting images that had 404 links, in such cases, it can in turn invoke a 404 call.

If the 404 calls exceed the threshold set under Defender > Firewall > 404 Detection it can cause a lockout.

Maybe that was that case? Checking the logs should give a better idea of what caused it, please do let us know how that goes and if you still need any further assistance regarding this.

    Have a nice day ahead.

    Best Regards,
    Nithin

    HI there @wpmudevsupport11

just checked the log, I got a “Request for file /wp-content/uploads/2020/11/header_agenda.jpg which doesn’t exist” but I never even had this img uploaded, and looking at the others IP lockouts, several IPs made the same request (attack), is it a thing nowadays to look for this file?

    wish you a nice day!

    Hi @wkreations951357

Can you click on the right button of mouse > inspect to open the browser console, then check if the 404 image link is showing for you?

    https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Tools/Browser_Console

Sometimes an old image embedded in any theme or plugin setting that is loading a 404 can cause it.

JPG and PNG are usually fine to receive 404, you can bypass those files in Defender > 404 > Files, folders and file types

Let us know if you see the 404 link in the browser console.

    Hi @wpmudevsupport12

I’m using the hello theme from elementor here on my site, it was blank, I made the entire site using the elementor and my own imgs, and the attack on that “header_agenda.jpg” continues.

    thanks!

    Hi @wkreations951357

    I hope you’re well today!

It doesn’t really seem like any “attack” but rather that there is some reference to that file on site somewhere. This can be something that you (or other user if there are other users that are allowed to edit the site) have added in the past (in November 2020) and removed later on or it could even be added e.g. by some plugin (e.g. if you got any “import” plugins that, for example, import some feeds’ content), it might be a “leftover” reference from some sort of “demo content”.

I’d really suggest checking the site thoroughly to try to find out where this image is attempted to be loaded and you could then remove such reference.

If you see a lot of occurrences of this 404 lockout for this file for 3rd-party/outside visitors you could also share a link to your site so we could take a look to see if we can find it anywhere in site’s source code on front-end.

    Best regards,
    Adam

    Heya @wpmudev-support8

    doing fine here, and you?

ok, let’s change the word attack to request, to make it short about the site I’m developing: I made it using the hello theme + elementor, and I didn’t use any demo nor anything like this, I made it using just blocks, header and footer was the same, made them by my self using elementor, I don’t name my imgs using the underline to separete words and i’m the sole dev for this project so no other people uploading things there, i’d love to share the link to the site, but it’s in coming soon mode until it’s released for public view, that would be very soon, I can share with you when this happens, until then it’s a no go from the boss.

hope you all have a great day!

    Hi @wkreations951357,

Maybe the URLs is hardcoded in the database too, you could try running a search in the Database if possible to rule that out.

Other than that, it’s tough to say what exactly is causing this behaviour at the moment without seeing the website live. If checking the database doesn’t help, once you have the website public, please do follow up with the URL, and we can double-check where exactly the URL is called too.

    Have a nice day ahead.

    Kind Regards,
    Nithin
